4/27/2011 ~ ALLEN ROAD LIVING SHORELINE PRE-CONSTRUCTION MEETING

The BSHCA “Living Shoreline” project principles met at Bill McGrath’s house to organize the project. Present were Bill Grochowicz, President; Howard Hoffman, Past President; Mike Tiechman, Past President; Fred Bekiarian, Director; Vic Lido, Director; Bob Merkle, Member; Marion McGrath, Director; Bill McGrath, Member & Author of Grant Request.

With all of the permits in place, the project is due to commence this weekend, Saturday April 30^th and Sunday May 1^st to coincide with Earth Day. We will attempt to complete the project in two days weather permitting.

It was noted that Bill McGrath and Bill Grochowicz visited a similar project in Brick Township earlier in the week. The project was much smaller in scale than ours and was professionally installed by an environmental services company for a private homeowner. The project was installed 3 or 4 weeks ago and was 50% destroyed last week by the recent nor’easter. See Figure 1 (the next blog post).

Bill McGrath evaluated the failures and came up with the following modifications to our project:

1.      Tie the coir matting to each and every oak stake on the inside of the boilogs along both

rows of biologs.

2.    Tie the coir matting seam together with twine every 2 feet for the entire 200 ft.

3.    Hammer 1” x 1” x 12” stakes with ¼” holes drilled thru the tops every 8 ft. along the coir matting overlap and tie the overlapped matting to the stakes with twine.

Because the project is highly complex and we expect anywhere between 60 and 100 volunteers, we need an organizational plan for our work force. Bill McGrath offered the attached two documents: “LIVING SHORELINE ORGANIZATION AND JOB TASKS" See Figure 2 (the next blog post). and “LIVING SHORELINE VOLUNTEER WORK FORCE PLAN” See Figure 3 (the next blog post).

The following team captains for the project were chosen: Howard Hoffman, Blue Team Captain ; Fred Bekiarian, Green Team Captain; Mike Tiechman, Red Team Captain; Bob Merkle, Team Captain in charge of dune grass planting by the eagle scout project and parking lot. Marion McGrath and Lucille Pavolic, Registration and assigning volunteers to teams. Vic Lido, Project Supervisor and Teams Coordinator. Bill Grochowicz, Refreshments,  Troubleshooting and Contingencies.
